A share of 17.3 percent have an Asian background. In 2022, most immigrants had a background in (former) Soviet Union: 120,545 persons. The majority of 62.7 percent were women. Persons with a background from Ukraine, Poland, Syria, Turkey and India also immigrated to the Netherlands relatively often in 2022.
What is the racial mix of the Netherlands? Over 80% of the population of the Netherlands is white. Most of these are ethnic Dutch. However, many other people in the country come from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
About half of the city's inhabitants are indigenous Dutch; about one-tenth are of Surinamese origin; and there are significant Moroccan and Turkish minorities.

From 1667 to 1975, Suriname was a colony of the Netherlands. Migration began during the colonial era. Initially this was mainly the colonial elite but expanded during the 1920s and 1930s to the less fortunate inhabitants looking for better education, employment or other opportunities.
Germans with swarthy or darker complexions were called "Black Dutch" (or Schwarze Deutsche or "black German"). According to James Pylant, who studied families claiming "Black Dutch" as part of their heritage: "There are strong indications that the original "Black Dutch" were swarthy-complexioned Germans.

The Netherlands has a long history with Islam. For many centuries it ruled the largest Muslim nation in the world, Indonesia. Today, the Netherlands has just over 17.1 million inhabitants, of which roughly five percent are Muslims, although the general public tends to overestimate this number.
Are there many Muslims in Amsterdam?
Islam is the second largest religion in the Netherlands, after Christianity, and is practised by 5% of the population according to 2018 estimates. The majority of Muslims in the Netherlands belong to the Sunni denomination. Many reside in the country's four major cities: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht.

The two biggest groups of native speakers are the around 17 million people that live in the Netherlands and the 6.5 million in Belgium. But Dutch is an official language in six countries, so apart from the Netherlands and Belgium, it is also an official language in Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Aruba and Suriname.
There are between 10,000 and 15,000 people of Serbian descent living in the Netherlands.

The Dutch are descended from the ancient Germanic tribes that inhabited the region now known as the Netherlands, while the Germans are descended from the various Germanic tribes that inhabited the area now known as Germany.
They form the largest ethnic minority group in the country; thus, the Turks are the second-largest ethnic group in the Netherlands after the ethnic Dutch.
Afro-Dutch or Black Dutch are residents of the Netherlands who are of Sub-Saharan African ancestry.
Migration history
Earlier arrivals consisted of "guest workers", whose recruitment and admission was governed by a bilateral treaty signed in 1969. From the 1970s, the number arriving under family reunification schemes became more significant. Around half originated from the mountainous Rif region.

Black presence in Dutch football, however, goes back to the beginning of the 20th century. Constant Cremer, for example, born in Congo, son to a Dutch merchant for the African Trade Company, played successfully for Tilburg-side Willem II.
The Germans
Like the dark-skinned immigrants from the Netherlands who settled in New York, German immigrants to Pennsylvania and other areas were also referred to as “Black Dutch” if they had darker than usual complexions.
