Does the Netherlands have free healthcare?
The Netherlands has a universal healthcare system. It's managed by the government and supplemented by private insurers. Anyone living or working in the Netherlands must obtain basic level health insurance (with or without additional coverage) from a Dutch provider.
Anyone living and working in the Netherlands is legally obliged to purchase statutory basic health insurance (basisverzekering) from private insurers. Adults choose their policy as individuals; there is no family coverage. Children aged 18 and under are automatically covered by their parents' insurance.
The Dutch system is worthy of such attention: It provides virtually everybody with high-quality and convenient medical care, and at a much cheaper price than the U.S. system—per capita health spending in the Netherlands in 2009 was only $4,914, compared with $7,960 in the U.S.
Dutch student health insurance is obligatory for all students that temporarily live and study in the Netherlands and work or do a paid internship simultaneously. If your stay is temporary and you only study in the Netherlands, you can keep your home country insurance or take out private health insurance if necessary.
Introduction. The Dutch healthcare system ranks 3rd in the 2022 World Index of Healthcare Innovation, with an overall score of 59.86, behind only Switzerland (1st, 66.49) and Ireland (2nd, 60.04). The Netherlands ranked 2nd in 2021, and 3rd in 2020.
However, Brazil is the only country in the world that offers free healthcare for all its citizens. Also, Norway is the first country in the world to implement a free healthcare policy as far back as 1912. Coincidentally, Norway is recognized as one of the healthiest countries in the world.
Everyone who lives or works in the Netherlands, is required by law to have a health insurance. In most cases a Dutch health insurance is required, but there are exceptions. If a Dutch health insurance is not required for you, it is not possible to get one.
Dutch people are eating more plant products, like fruit and vegetables, unsalted nuts and legumes. They are eating less red and processed meat. They are also drinking fewer sugary drinks. Both children and adults are eating and drinking more healthily.
Though the country is better known for its liberal drug laws than its cuisine, the Dutch diet ranked the healthiest out of 125 countries in a wide sweeping report out of Oxfam that looked at factors like food availability, affordability, food quality and obesity rates.
The Netherlands ranks second, for instance, in a 2021 study that analysed healthcare in 11 high-income countries. Also in 2021, CEOWORLD Magazine's Health Care Index rated the Netherlands as the 11th best healthcare system in the world.
Can you see a doctor in the Netherlands without insurance?
The GP if you're not insured yet
The GP can't refuse to give you medical care if you are in need of it. You might have to pay the costs yourself if you're not insured. When you receive your insurance information you could send the doctor's invoice to the insurer to see if the company will reimburse you.
Healthcare System Performance Ranking
Key findings: “The top-performing countries overall are Norway, the Netherlands, and Australia. The United States ranks last overall, despite spending far more of its gross domestic product on health care.

🤔 Can you study in the Netherlands for free? In general, there are no tuition-free options. The best way to study in the Netherlands for free is to obtain a scholarship. There are various scholarship options for international students, with some excellent opportunities for non-EEA students.
Using five performance indicators to measure health systems in 191 member states, it finds that France provides the best overall health care followed among major countries by Italy, Spain, Oman, Austria and Japan.
Foreigners in the Netherlands can rest assured that world-class hospitals and medical care are easily accessible across the country. Though only half the size of the U.S. state of South Carolina, the Netherlands is home to seven hospitals that rank within the top 130 in Newsweek's The World's Best Hospitals in 2022.
In 2022, the national healthcare expenditure reached a value of more than 107.6 billion euros, nearly equaling the amount spent in the previous year. In a population of over 17 million people, this came to around 7,116 euros worth of Dutch health care expenses per capita.
“Free” healthcare isn't actually free. Healthcare that is provided by government agencies is usually funded by citizens in one way or another. The country's healthcare budget may come directly out of their taxes, or it may be funded through payroll taxes which affect a citizen's take-home pay.
Universal health care would lower costs and prevent medical bankruptcy. A June 2022 study found the United States could have saved $105.6 billion in COVID-19 (coronavirus) hospitalization costs with single-payer universal health care during the pandemic.
Not free of charge
Do keep in mind that medical services (both regular and emergency) are not provided free of charge in the Netherlands. We recommend checking your own health insurance and/or travel insurance before you head to our country.
You must take out Dutch health insurance within four months of your permanent residence permit coming into force. Your health insurance policy must be effective from the date your residence permit comes into force.
How does the Netherlands fund their healthcare system?
The system is 50% financed from payroll taxes paid by employers to a fund controlled by the Health regulator. The government contributes an additional 5% to the regulator's fund. The remaining 45% is collected as premiums paid by the insured directly to the insurance company.
The Netherlands has had steady natural gas resources since 1959, when a wellspring was discovered. Currently the Netherlands accounts for more than 25% of all natural gas reserves in the European Union. Over the following decades, the sale of natural gas generated a significant rise in revenue for the Netherlands.
In 2021, around half of the Dutch population aged 18 years and over were overweight.
The prevalence of overweight (BMI greater than 25 kg/m2) in the Dutch adult population was 34% in men and 24% in women.
Cancer and heart disease were the leading causes of death in the Netherlands last year, claiming slightly more than half of the people who died last year. Covid-19 dropped to the sixth most common cause of death, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported on Tuesday.
